How to Choose Coveralls for Restoration and Site Work

Ezy Consumables Type 5 & 6 disposable hooded coverall

Coveralls are one of those PPE items that look simple until the wrong suit tears on a fastener, leaves gaps at the wrist, or gets worn again after a dirty room. A basic dust overall and a Type 5 & 6 disposable coverall are not the same product. Buy the wrong one and you either contaminate the next room or send a technician home in the same clothes they wore through mould, soot or fibre work.

This is a buying and use guide for Australian restoration, mould, fire, carpet and building professionals. It covers what coveralls are for on a trade site, what Type 5 and Type 6 protection means in plain language, how disposable coveralls / disposable overalls differ from a Tyvek-style suit name on a search result, and what to check before you restock the van.

It is not a hazard assessment and it is not a substitute for the site procedure, the SDS, or the compliance documentation that comes with the stock you buy. Match the garment to the exposure, wear it as single-use PPE when that is the job, and treat coveralls as part of a full PPE system — not as the whole control.

What coveralls actually are

Coveralls are a full-body protective garment. On restoration and site work they are usually a hooded suit that covers clothing from the neck down, with openings managed at the zip, wrists, ankles and hood. The point is barrier protection: keep dust, fibres, light spray and splash off the technician’s street clothes, and reduce what gets walked into the clean zone.

Trade language mixes a few names for the same aisle. You will hear coveralls, disposable coveralls, disposable overalls and Tyvek suit used loosely. Tyvek is a brand name that often shows up in search results for white disposable suits. What matters on the label is the protection type, the design (hooded or not), and whether the garment is disposable single-use PPE — not the marketing nickname.

Disposable coveralls are intended for one wear then disposal. That is the usual choice on contamination-sensitive work because you do not want to launder soot, mould residue or fibre dust through a work truck or a home washing machine.

When coveralls earn their keep on restoration work

Restoration is not only extraction and drying. You also strip, clean, bag and hand back rooms that still hold dust, spray, fibres and splash risk.

Water damage restoration. Tear-out, wet contents and Category work put technicians into damp, dirty rooms. A disposable coverall keeps wet soil and contaminated material off clothing while you strip and bag.

Fire and smoke cleaning. Soot marks everything it touches. A hooded disposable coverall reduces how much of that ends up on shirts, vans and the next clean job.

Mould remediation. Spore and fibre control is a systems job — containment, negative air, PPE and disposal. Coveralls sit with gloves and respiratory protection as the clothing barrier inside the work zone. Pair them with proper dust containment so the suit is not fighting an open doorway.

Asbestos preparation work. Film, tape and PPE are for the controls the licence and hygienist specify. Disposable coveralls are a listed use for asbestos preparation work on the Ezy Consumables Type 5 & 6 product — they are not a licence, a clearance or a substitute for regulated controls.

Contents cleaning, insulation handling, industrial maintenance, commercial cleaning and construction clean-up. Anywhere airborne particles, fibres, light spray or minor splash are part of the day, a laminated Type 5 & 6 coverall is the practical clothing barrier the listing is built for.

What coveralls are not. They are not a chemical immersion suit. They are not a substitute for gloves, respiratory protection or footwear controls. Type 6 is limited liquid spray and splash — not a guarantee against every liquid on the SDS. Read the exposure, then pick the garment.

Type 5 vs Type 6 vs “whatever white suit is on special”

The aisle and the search results mix three ideas that fail in different ways.

Type 5. Relates to hazardous dry particles. On site that usually means dust, fibres and airborne particles where you need a barrier garment, not a cotton overall.

Type 6. Relates to limited liquid spray and splash. Useful for light spray and minor splash exposure — not for standing in a chemical bath or assuming every liquid is covered.

A generic white disposable overall with no type stated. Fine for keeping paint off a shirt on a clean DIY job. Poor as a default for mould, fire, fibre or contamination-sensitive restoration. If the listing does not state Type 5 / Type 6 (or the equivalent documentation for the stock in the carton), treat the protection level as unknown.

Tyvek suit as a search term. Many buyers type “tyvek suit” when they mean a white disposable coverall. Brand names vary. Buy by protection type, hooded design, size and pack format — then confirm the AU/NZ compliance documentation on the stock you receive.

If you only stock one thin dust suit “for everything,” you will either over-protect and waste money on clean work, or under-protect on a dirty room. Stock a Type 5 & 6 disposable coverall for the contaminated jobs and keep street clothes out of the work zone.

What to look for when you buy coveralls

Ignore lifestyle packaging. Check the garment for the job you actually run.

Protection class on the listing. Look for Type 5 and Type 6 (or clear particle / limited spray language you can verify). The Ezy Consumables disposable coveralls stocked at Restoration Warehouse are listed as Type 5 and Type 6 for spray, airborne particles, fibres and light liquid splash.

Hooded full-body design. A hood improves coverage around the head and neck. Open-collar “painter’s overalls” leave more clothing and skin exposed when you lean into a dirty ceiling or bag debris.

Cuffs, ankles and zip detail. Gaps at the wrist and ankle are where dust walks in. The Ezy Consumables Type 5 & 6 coverall is listed with cuffed ankle, feet and hood — check the fit before you enter the zone, and tape or glove-overlap as your site procedure requires.

Material. Laminated protective fabric is the listed construction for the Ezy coverall. That is the barrier style commonly selected for trade environments with particles and light liquid exposure. Do not invent a fabric weight or a chemical chart from this page.

Size that actually fits the crew. Medium, Large, X Large, XX Large and XXX Large are the size attributes on the listing. A suit that is too small rips at the shoulder. A suit that is swimming leaves baggy fabric to snag on fasteners. Fit before the job, not in the doorway.

Pack format. Carton of 25 for van and depot restock, or single for a one-off. Confirm pack type on the product page before you order.

Compliance documentation. For workplace use in Australia and New Zealand, confirm supplied stock includes applicable AU/NZ compliance documentation before workplace use. Do not assume a certificate number from a blog post. Check what arrived in the carton.

Disposable single-use intent. If the job is contamination control, plan to dispose of the suit with the affected waste stream the job requires — not to fold it for tomorrow.

How to use coveralls on site without creating the next contamination path

Dress in the right order. Put the coverall on before you enter the dirty zone. Zip fully. Seat the hood. Overlap glove cuffs over the suit sleeves (or follow your site donning procedure). Check ankles are closed before you walk through debris.

Stay inside the zone intent. A disposable coverall is not a reason to lean on clean furniture or walk the suit through a client kitchen. Exit through the defined opening, and remove the suit so the dirty face rolls inward.

Change when compromised. A tear, an open zip, heavy saturation or a move from a dirty room to a clean room is a change-out. Single-use means single-use.

Dispose with the job. Contaminated coveralls from mould, sewage, fire or asbestos-adjacent work are not general skip waste because the fabric looks empty. Bag them with the rest of the affected material as the scope requires.

Stock the van by size, not by hope. Keep a mix of Medium through XXX Large if your crew spans sizes. A carton of 25 is easier to manage than three singles bought between jobs.

Stock disposable coveralls with the rest of the PPE kit

Coveralls fail at the same moment you need a clothing barrier — a mould strip-out, a soot clean, a fibre or dust job where street clothes should not leave the work zone. Treat Type 5 & 6 disposable coveralls as van stock next to gloves and the containment gear you already carry.
